Mission

The mission of the Cecil W. Robbins Library of Louisburg College is to support the academic programs of the institution. The library exists primarily to serve the students’ and faculty’s curricular needs for print, non-print, and digital resources. In addition, it promotes lifelong education by teaching library users both information literacy and digital literacy skills through course-related library instruction. The library also serves faculty by assisting them in their instructional objectives and professional research goals.

Library Policies

The library offers three different study zones with noise levels ranging from collaborative to silent:

  • The Learning Commons is located on the ground floor of the library and permits collaboration and talking. Instructors can bring a class into the open library to work on research without submitting a request. For librarian assistance with your class, please complete an Instruction Request Form. Please ask students to self-monitor the volume of their voices out of respect for other groups and individuals who are also studying in the library.

The Quiet Study area is located on the second floor or mezzanine of the library. This space is not for collaborative study but is reserved for individual computer use and personal study. If you bring a class upstairs into the Quiet Study area for research, please be mindful of other students and refrain from speaking loudly. Ask students not to socialize on the second floor. The Learning Commons downstairs or the computer lab are the best places for verbal instruction and students to work aloud together.

The Quiet Room is a comfortable space reserved for silent study and reading. It is located on the second floor of the library in the back right corner encased in glass to block ambient noise. Wireless internet is available in the Quiet Room for use on tablets, laptops, and mobile devices. There are no library computers in this space. Please use the Quiet Study area or the Learning Commons to access library computers.

The library permits no food or drinks in the computer lab or the Success Center but allows snacks and beverages in closed containers everywhere else in the library. Please clean up after yourself and discard wrappers, cups, and containers in the garbage when you leave.

Library staff may ask you to leave the library due to any of the following:

  • Raised voices or shouting
  • Verbally abusing or harassing others
  • Becoming disruptive or argumentative
  • Fighting or rowdy behavior
  • Overt signs of substance abuse, including drunkenness
  • Overt sexual behavior
  • Bringing weapons (simulated or real) into the library
  • Theft, or vandalism of library equipment or collections
  • Intimidating library staff or patrons
  • Not following requests by library staff to cease inappropriate or disruptive behavior

Consequences

Staff may ask patrons who violate any of these policies to leave the library and they may lose their privilege to use the library. They may also be referred to the Dean of Students and be subject to disciplinary action, criminal prosecution, or other legal action as appropriate.

Staff will call campus safety whenever necessary. The Robbins Library will notify law enforcement authorities concerning any criminal behavior in the library. Staff may bar non-Louisburg College students from the library.

The computers in the Cecil W. Robbins Library and Learning Commons are reserved for use by the Louisburg College community for library research, study, email, access to Brightspace, and general use. Each computer has the Microsoft Office Suite and Internet connectivity to the campus network. All of the computers have Math Excel installed. Library staff may ask anyone using the library computers for recreational purposes to give up the workstation to someone waiting to do research. Library staff will assist with Microsoft Office programs, Google, Brightspace, and email.

The use of the Library's computers is on a first-come, first-served basis for students. During peak research times, it may be necessary to limit Internet sessions to accommodate all users.

The internet can access valuable information; however, internet resources may contain controversial material. Selection policies governing the library's purchase of materials do not apply to material accessed electronically via the internet. The library does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the internet and cannot be held responsible for its content. Each user must take responsibility for his or her internet activities.

The Robbins Library and Learning Commons computer resources are for academic use. Conduct that violates this policy includes, but is not limited to the following activities:

  • Installing files, software, CD-ROMS, etc. to the library computers
  • Unauthorized copying of copyrighted material including downloading music or video files without permission
  • Violating software license agreements
  • Attempts to configure the library computers in any way
  • Using the internet for any illegal activity
  • Harassing others including displaying text or graphics that may reasonably be construed as offensive and obscene
  • Disruption or interference with other computer users
  • Using the computer to run a business

The library reserves the right to terminate the internet access privileges of any person abusing these privileges.

Louisburg College currently registered students, faculty, and staff members can log on to the Robbins Library computer workstations using their Louisburg College ID and password. Computers are no longer accessible to anyone without a current Louisburg College ID.

Community members are welcome to use the following Robbins Library services and resources:

  • General reference assistance
  • Collection access for research purposes to be used within the library
  • Interlibrary loan services through Franklin County Library
  • Study areas

Printing, copying, scanning and sending, and faxing are free for currently enrolled Louisburg College students and faculty.  There are two printers in the library, one on the ground floor Learning Commons, and one upstairs in the Quiet Study area.

To print in the library:

A student must log in to a computer with his or her Louisburg College username and password to print from a library computer.  If a student logged into a computer under another student’s name the print job will go to the other student’s print queue.

At the printer, swipe the back of your college ID card on the card reader to access your print job. The first time you print swipe your card and then type in your Louisburg username and password to synchronize your ID card to the printer. Once a student has synchronized their ID card, they swipe and access the print queue without the need to key in usernames or passwords. If a student does not have his or her student ID card with them, they can directly key their username and password into the printer to access the print queue.

Choose the Secure Print driver in the print menu on the computer.

Choose the document you would like to print from the print queue on the printer screen.
  • Select “print and delete” to print and remove the document from the print queue.
  • Select “print and keep” to print the document and keep it in your queue for future printing.
Please ask a librarian for help with the scan, send, or fax functions.
